Private lodging is expensive, I looked already, and cheapest hotel for this period runs between $2,700 and $3,700 for 19 nights, from July, 20th until August, 8th. However, It is still cheaper than US college and experience definitely worth it. Flight from JFK to Amsterdam is $980.00 for economy flight and train to Utrecht inly $10.00 one way. Total trip cost will be around $5K, averaged.
